TOURISMINLIBERIA

Liberia, Africa’s oldest republic has a unique history that has always drawn tourists to the small West African nation state. Africa's former "Grain Coast", has a wealth of mineral and natural resources, among which its virgin tourism industry represents a promising new source for economic and social development including infrastructure development as well.

Like other tourist receiving and tourist generating countries worldwide, Liberia has benefited and is still benefiting from its expanded tourist industry including the contribution to the balance of payments, employment opportunities, improved travel facilities and a Capital City that boasts the lowest crime rate in West Africa.

Liberia offers the best in tourist attraction, ranging from cultural tourism to ethnic tourism, historical tourism to environmental tourism, from recreational tourism on to business tourism.

Liberia also offers many tourist attractions ranging from its culture and wildlife to modern facilities for an enjoyable stay.

Liberian tourism provides a wide variety of artisanal crafts that can be found any where across the length and breadth of the country. From the intricately designed bamboo furniture to the well sculptured mahogany figurines depicting typical Liberia cultural themes, tourists will find it almost difficult to make a choice in deciding on a favorite souvenir.

The best season to visit Liberia is from early November to the end of April. The country enjoys good dry and sunny weather, coupled with gentle breeze you would ever come across in West Africa. During the dry spell, beaches in Liberia are usually overcrowded and fill with all sorts of entertainment ranging from live band performances to beach parties.

Youngsters and adults, foreigners and residents all flock to the various beaches to enjoy the Triple "S" of Liberian touristy allurement: - Sun, Sand and Sea!

From Bernard's to Barnes and on to Kendeja, thousands throng en masse on Weekends, especially Sundays to entertain themselves and escape the hustle and bustle of Metropolitan Monrovia.

Liberia is also famous for its historical sites and landmarks, ideally located in the Capital City of Monrovia and its environs.

On Broad Street, downtown Monrovia is the old edifice of the Providence Baptist Church, the oldest Christian Church in the land.

The Executive Pavilion, also on Broad Street, which once served as the official dwelling place for most of Liberia's presidents, from Joseph Jenkins Roberts to Edwin Barclay, is one of the national shrines.

The Centennial Pavilion on Broad Street is another architectural masterpiece that plays host to myriad historic monuments and tombs. The Inauguration of the first President of Liberia, Joseph Jenkins Roberts is immortalized in "The Inauguration Monument".

Within the gates of the Centennial Pavilion lie the mortal remains of President William V.S. Tubman, Liberia's eighteenth head of state.

The Providence Island is another national shrine that occupies a special place in the hearts of many Liberians, as the birthplace of the Liberian nation. It was on this strip of land that the freed slaves from the United States originally settled before integrating with their aboriginal brothers. The Cotton Tree under which King Long Peter and the settlers signed one of the treaties still stands today amidst the ruined infrastructure of the Providence Island.

Indeed, Liberia is a mosaic enriched in a cultural heritage that is ready to serve as a fount of information and entertainment for the avid traveler.
